| The English department of the college happens to be the largest department in the Arts faculty with two full-time sanctioned posts and one post is based on C.H.B. English has been taught in the college since its inception in 1978. But it was introduced as a special subject in 1983. It also has Post-graduate center of English affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. The College PG centre for English has been set up in the year 2000. The Department has played an important role in establishing relevant specializations as English Language Teaching. The Department of English covers, enriches and reinforces the prosperous heritage offered by literature, facilitate ideas that provoke, push and take care of critical as well as creative thinking, develops inbuilt values and builds an emotional and intellectual connectivity between the students and society. It enhances the communication skills among the rural students. Literature is an important cultural product of the society. And the study of English literature offers insights into the worldviews of different societies. The curriculum for both UG and PG programs develops the rich talents of students. The syllabus of English is designed to cater the needs of the students by the BOS Savitribai Phule Pune University Pune. The department always strives to provide quality education to the hilly, tribal and rural students. The faculty is actively involved in research activities. The department also conducts Remedial Couching Course for FYBA/B.COM/ B.Sc. Students and facilitate Language Lab for spoken English for practical purposes. The department of English is one of the most active departments in the college. There are three teachers in the department. English is taught at the compulsory level, general level and special level. Compulsory English is taught at FYBA, SYBA, TYBA and F.Y.B.Com level. F.Y.B.Com students can offer additional English instead of Marathi. S.Y. B.Sc. students can offer Optional English instead of Marathi. The Students who intend to offer English as their special subject have to study one paper of General English at F.Y.B.A. level only. This provision has been made with a view to providing additional training to students who want to offer English as their special subject. However, even if the student decides to offer English as his special subject at S.Y.B.A. and has not offered this additional paper, he can offer English and can appear for F.Y.B.A. paper while keeping terms for S.Y.B.A. Compulsory English has been introduced with a view to inculcating among students English Language skills. It is expected that this course should enable students to have working knowledge of English language. Although the aim is acquisition of language skills, students are introduced to thought content which exposes them to modern ideas and recent intellectual developments. Students who offer English as their special subject are required to study English literature. In the years after independence, British literature formed the core part of the syllabus. But in the course of time courses in American Literature, African Literature, Caribbean Literature, and Indian Writing in English have also been introduced. For these students, acquisition of linguistic skills is just a tool which they have to apply while studying literature in English. At the postgraduate level, there are papers which cover an extensive period of literature and the representative texts of that period are prescribed. In the second part there are a number of options. The emphasis is on developing analytical ability of students through the study of these texts. In addition to literature, there are also papers in linguistics. Considering that many post graduates students who become teachers at later stage, for them there is a paper called ‘English Language and Literature Teaching’ in which students are taught to overcome various problems that students face while studying English at various levels. The teachers in the department have an awareness of all such aspects related to syllabus designing and they keep updating themselves by attending seminars, reading reference books and by doing research. One striking example of our awareness may be cited here. Considering that students make a large number of spelling and other errors while writing, this department prepared notes for F.Y.B.A. Compulsory English and gave them to students. Students who practiced writing with the help of these notes were benefited and an improvement in percentage of overall result was observed. A statutory committee of the university visited the department and after confirming that all requirements are fulfilled recommended to university that the college be given permission to start Postgraduate classes on no grant basis. The achievements of the department have been quite significant, considering that our college is based in rural area; our students have no exposure to English from their childhood. The exposure that they get during their high school years is far from satisfactory. As a result when the student comes to college he/she is totally inadequate for the syllabus in higher education. His /Her skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking are far below the required level. Consequently, students hold English language in awe and in bewildered state. They adore those who can handle the language with ease, but dare not make such an effort themselves. And so our first duty is to remove this fear, this feeling of inferiority complex from the mind of our students. Considering that in spite of this, almost 25 to 30 students offer English as their special subject proves that we have succeeded in our efforts to a large degree. Apart from examination success, our department has encouraged students to develop communication skills which are quite essential in modern age. We encourage students to speak in English among themselves. Every Saturday students of English special come together and speak on various topics in their syllabus. This gives them practice in spoken English. The department is proud that our students organize welcome and valedictory functions on their own and conduct them quite successfully. The students of the department come through examination with flying colors. Quite a few students get first class at the graduation level. We are proud that during the last four decades, a large number of our students have become teachers in high schools; a few of them are college lecturers and officers in government departments. Whenever possible the department has conducted practice examination, modeled on the annual examination so that the students perform better in the final examination. The department intends to conduct a diagnostic-cum-entrance test which will help students to make decision about offering English as their special subject.
